We are sorry to announce that the much-loved actor, John Shrapnel, passed away at home after a long illness on February 14th 2020. His family was by his side.
Born in 1942, he attended City of London School and Cambridge University. He became an original member of the National Youth Theatre, and went on to work extensively in theatre, particularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
His was a familiar face on television from dramas such as Elizabeth R, Professional Foul, The Burston Rebellion, Blackeyes, GBH, and Between the Lines, and his career included roles in over 25 films including Notting Hill, Gladiator and Troy. Most recently he played Lear at the Tobacco Factory, appeared opposite his son Lex in the Young Vic’s revival of Caryl Churchill’s A Number, and as Camillo in the Winter’s Tale with the Branagh Theatre Company.
The family write, âShrap will be remembered for his voice, but behind that voice was a wonderful father, a loving husband, a dear and generous friend.â
His wife Francesca, and sons Lex, Tom and Joe, have let us know that there will be a family funeral, to be followed by a memorial service in London later this year.
